Historic Sites
Summer spring resorts, historic homes, and thriving farms are among the landmarks that give Eastern Montgomery its distinctive character and continue to bring visitors to this corner of the state. The museum collection documents these and other attractions through photographs, first-hand accounts, and memorabilia passed down through the generations.

Crocket Springs Resort, opened in 1889 south of Shawsville.

This oldest house in Shawsville, built in 1848 for Dr. McCokey and Dr. Jim Kent, was used as a storehouse and inn. It became a regular stopping place for the eight-horse schoop wagons en route to Lynchburg. John Davidson sold goods here during the Civil War.
The Fatheringay estate in Elliston, built in 1796 by Col. George Hancock, before an addition was made in the late 1950s to make it symmetrical. Hancock's daughter Julia married William Clark of Lewis and Clark fame.
The Vine Gazebo in Shawsville, built in the 1800s by German immigrants.
Alleghany Springs Resort, circa 1920, built in 1877 by the Calhoun family. It was one of the largest summer resorts in Southwest Virginia.
